Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah inaugurated the Gangadhar Deshpande Memorial Building and Photo Gallery at Ramtheerth Nagar in Belagavi on December 26.
The memorial was built in memory of the Gandhian and freedom fighter who organized the 1924 Belgaum Congress session under the chairmanship of Mahatma Gandhi.

Under the leadership of Gangadhar Rao Deshpande, the organizers dug a big well to provide water to the delegates and named it ‘Pampa Sarovara’. This water source, which is now known as the Congress well, still gives sweet water till today.

The hall has been constructed at a cost of Rs 1.58 crore on an area of ​​about 15 Guntas. The complex has a hall, a statue of Mr. Deshpande, a photo gallery and a garden.
The Chief Minister recalled Deshpande’s contribution to the freedom struggle and the 1924 convention. “A proud son of Hudali village near Belagavi, Mr. Deshpande was known as the ‘Lion of Karnataka’ for his steadfast stand against the British. He was a supporter of the division of the state on linguistic lines and dreamed of a united Karnataka. He served as the AICC General Secretary in 1920. Born in a wealthy landowning family, he started khadi in the village. He chose to lead a simple life as a worker.He established khadi and village industries in many places in Belagavi district He was a selfless, spiritually minded person,” the chief minister said.
