The number of Lok Sabha members elected with 30% or less of the total electorate in their constituencies rose to 178 in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, or nearly a third, from 125 in 2019. This is the data released by the Election Commission on Thursday.
A party-wise analysis shows that 57 out of 240 BJP MPs or nearly a quarter, 30 out of 99 MPs or almost a third of the Congress and 31 out of 37 MPs or four-fifths of the Samajwadi Party won with 30 percent or less votes. Total voters in their constituency.
Out of 542 constituencies (excluding Surat, where the BJP candidate won unopposed), 8 won with less than 10% of the total electorate in their constituency or equal to 20% of the votes, while 170 won with less than 20% of the votes. or equal to 30%, 266 members won less than or equal to 30% 40%, and 92 members won. Vote less than 40% or less than 50% of the total voters in their constituencies in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Only 6 MPs have been elected by getting more than 50 percent of the votes of the total voters in their constituencies.
Of the 178 candidates who won with 30 per cent or less, Uttar Pradesh had the highest number of 65, followed by Bihar (30) and Maharashtra (24).
As far as the percentage of votes of the winning candidates over the total valid votes cast in their respective constituencies is concerned, five candidates won by getting 30 percent or less of the votes, while 28 candidates won by getting more than 30 percent of the votes or less. 40% vote share; 230 won less than 40% or equal to 50%; 215 candidates won by less than 50% to 60%; 57 candidates got less than 60 percent or less than 70 percent votes, while only seven candidates got more than 70 percent votes.
Sharing insights about voting in favor of national parties, the EC noted that six national parties — AAP, BSP, BJP, CPI(M), Congress, and National People’s Party — participated in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and the total vote share. These 6 parties had a total of 63.35% of valid votes.
According to the commission, in 2024, the bonds of 7,900 candidates were forfeited, while in 2019, 6,923 candidates contested the election, with a total of 3,921 independent candidates.
And only seven of them were elected, while 3,905 independent candidates forfeited their bonds.
In absolute terms, the BJP secured 23.59 crore votes, followed by the Congress with 13.67 crore, and the SP with 2.95 crore votes.
