The Pune Rural Police on Thursday arrested a 54-year-old man for allegedly sexually assaulting and killing two minor sisters aged eight and nine in a town in Pune district, officials said.
An official said that preliminary investigation revealed that the accused, who works as a kitchen in a local hotel, is also a neighbor of the victim and is familiar with their family.
According to the police, the girl’s body was found inside a drum used to collect water in a room near the house on Wednesday night.
On Wednesday morning, after not being able to find the girl who was seen playing near the house, the police started a search based on the complaint of the parents.
The police said that the father of the deceased was a caretaker and the mother was a labourer.
The police have registered a case under the Indian Penal Code (BNS) and the Prevention of Child Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act against the accused at a police station in Pune district.
The accused, who planned to escape somewhere in North India, was arrested from a lodge in Pune city, police said.
“The accused has been arrested for raping and killing a minor girl. “Further investigation is on to confirm what led to the crime,” said a senior police officer.
According to the police, the accused first sexually abused the younger and then the elder who came to his room to save her after hearing her sister’s cry, sexually abused her.
The man then killed both the victims and threw their bodies in a water drum, the police said.
