During zero hour in the Lok Sabha on Monday, several MPs raised issues related to the workforce – Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS), work culture in multinational corporations (MNCs) and social security measures for film technicians and support staff.

Krantikari Samajwadi Party (RASP) NK Premachandran has demanded the government to immediately implement the enhanced pension scheme under the Employees Pension Scheme (EPS), 1995 as approved by the Supreme Court in 2022.

He said that the Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) had given higher pension to only 8,401 subscribers out of 17,48,775 applicants for higher pension till August 7, 2024.

BJP MP Arun Govil asked the Information and Broadcasting Ministry and the Labor Ministry to ensure social security and standard contracts for technical and support staff in the film and television industry. Accusing manufacturers of exploiting technicians and supporting artists, he urged the government to enforce labor laws in the sector and provide overtime payments, provident funds and healthcare facilities to employees.

Trains for the festive season

In the context of upcoming celebrations like Christmas and New Year, Congress leader KC Venugopal urged the government to immediately deploy special trains so that people from Kerala who are working in other states can travel home at affordable rates.

His party colleague and Lok Sabha member from Ernakulam, Hiby Eden, raised the untimely death of 26-year-old chartered accountant Anna Sebastian Peraille in July 2024 while working at Ernst & Young (EY) in Pune. His death sparked a debate on work culture in the corporate environment and employee welfare. Mr. Eden said the incident showed how the culture of working in corporate companies was affecting the physical and mental health of young employees.
