The Delhi government has imposed a complete ban on production, storage, sale, through online marketing platforms, and bursting of all types of firecrackers in the National Capital Region throughout the year, the Supreme Court was informed on Thursday.
Senior advocate Shadan Farasat, who appeared on behalf of the government before the bench of Justice AS Oka and AG Masih, gave this information while hearing the issue of air pollution in the capital.
Farasat said that the Chief Secretary of the Government’s Environment and Forestry Department issued an order in this regard on November 19 using the authority under Section 5 of the Environment Protection Act.
The bench was also informed that Rajasthan had also imposed a “similar ban on that part of the State of Rajasthan falling within the National Capital Territory”.
The bench directed the “states of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana to impose similar restrictions imposed by the state of Delhi”.
On November 11, the Supreme Court asked the Delhi government to decide whether to extend the ban on the use of firecrackers to cover the entire year. “The right to live in a pollution-free environment is a fundamental right of every citizen protected by Article 21 of the Constitution of India,” the court said.
