The Tiruchi Corporation has planned to conduct a special drive to clear encroachments on major roads around the central bus stand and cantonment area.

Following complaints from residents and road safety activists, the corporation has planned to crack down on encroachments to clear space for pedestrians.

The campaign will be conducted at Reynolds Road, Royal Road, Rockins Road, Williams Road, McDonald’s Road, Warners Road, VOC Road and Heber Road under Zone IV of Tiruchi Corporation.

With the help of Metropolitan Police, a team of Corporation employees will confiscate the property of unauthorized makeshift shops, fruit shops, juice shops, mobile clothing shops, footpaths, storm water drains and ice cream shops encroaching on carriageways.

Especially after the closure of the overbridge near the railway junction, these encroachments are hindering the movement of pedestrians and vehicles around the central bus stand.

Frequent traffic jams were reported near the central bus stand due to encroachment by food stalls, most of which operate at night. On the road leading to the Central Bus Stand, several hawkers obstructed public movement.

Earlier, instead of encroaching on the road of the bus route, the municipality had instructed to move pushcarts and mobile food on the road.

“These encroachments caused inconvenience to pedestrians and created traffic jams. Thanjavur Road and East Boulevard Road near Gandhi Market will be the focus of the next phase of evictions,” said Corporation Commissioner V. Saravanan.

Enforcement campaigns will be conducted from time to time to ensure free flow of traffic in major commercial areas of the city.

Similar drives were recently conducted near railway junctions and on the Tiruchi-Pudukottai National Highway.
