The world of fragrance can be mesmerizing but confusing for amateurs. With so many types, and so many different notes to choose from, choosing the fragrance that suits you best can be a tedious and expensive affair.
Lucky for us, digital producer Dikshana Reddy shared an easy hack to help us in this endeavour. Taking to Instagram, she shared a video in which she claimed that rubbing your wrist for 5 seconds and smelling that area of ββskin can tell you what kind of perfume suits you. “If you smell floral, you should use floral perfumes like rose, jasmine and lily. If you smell like eggs, you should use refreshing body perfumes like citrus, woods, tea tree and aqua,” she said.
Curious, we asked the experts to shed some light on the accuracy of this phenomenon.
Giving the green light to the hack, Mihir Jain, Sales and Marketing Director, Insight Cosmetics said, βIt’s a way of using body heat to amplify certain fragrance notes to give insight into what might suit a person’s natural chemistry. However, this method can provide valuable guidance.
For example, if floral or spicy notes are detected, Jain suggests using a fragrance with notes of pear, orange blossom, pink pepper, and warm vanilla. If musky, sweet undertones emerge, then fragrances with a lively, musky profile may be ideal. For those who discover sweet, comforting scents like vanilla, these will appeal to their taste buds with rich, gourd notes. If a tropical, creamy scent stands out, then a scent with coconut and shea butter would be a great choice. While the pulse point trick can help guide people toward appropriate choices, personal preference and how the scent develops on their skin are the most important factors in choosing a signature scent.
Ishita Saxena, certified aromatherapist and founder of Arezou, says that how a fragrance smells depends on many factors. When it comes to the body, your skin type, pH level, skin pigmentation and body odor play a major role. Your age and personality are also important in this regard. “If you are young and energetic, you may like floral or fresh family scents. And if you want to show age, grace and strength, you may like spicy and woody notes,” she said.
Emotions, weather and even occasions sometimes determine your choice of fragrance. “You can opt for floral and fresh scents in summer and musk in winters. A strong scent for parties and a subtle one for work,” Saxana added.
