Delhi emerged as the main culprit after the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) conducted a surprise inspection of 29 institutes in six regions on Wednesday and Thursday and found 18 schools in the city flouting admission norms. Inspections, led by teams comprising CBSE officials and principals of affiliated schools, targeted institutions in Delhi, Bengaluru, Patna, Bilaspur, Varanasi and Ahmedabad.
Apart from Delhi, three schools from Varanasi, two each from Bengaluru, Patna, Ahmedabad, Bilaspur and Chhattisgarh were the other violators.
The purpose of the inspections was to assess CBSE’s compliance with affiliation by-laws which focus on enrollment practices, infrastructure standards, and overall management. According to the board, “most of the schools inspected were found to be in violation of the board’s bylaws by enrolling students beyond their actual attendance records, effectively creating ‘non-attendance’ enrollment.” Additionally, inspections revealed non-compliance with CBSE’s infrastructure standards.
CBSE is now in the process of issuing show cause notices to these institutions and is considering legal action. “These inspections mark an important step in the Board’s ongoing efforts to ensure transparency, accountability, and compliance of its guidelines by all affiliated schools,” CBSE said.
The crackdown follows similar inspections in September when the CBSE withdrew the affiliation of 21 schools and downgraded six others in Delhi and Rajasthan. At the time, CBSE reiterated its commitment to “maintain the highest academic standards and ensure strict compliance with its regulations”.
