Authorities have now arrested a self-styled magician who died in Ahmedabad city police custody earlier this month amid an ongoing investigation linked to more than a dozen murders, whose tip-off led to the arrest of the accused. said Thursday.
Jigar Gohil, who informed the Ahmedabad city police about the whereabouts of alleged serial killer Nawal Singh Chawda, has been arrested, Rajkot Rural Police said. Chawda is said to have killed 12 people in the past decade and confessed to these crimes after his arrest on December 3.
It is said that Gohil informed the Sarkhej police that there was a conspiracy to kill Chawda, the person who saved the life of Ahmedabad businessman Abhijitsinh Bharatkumar Rajput.
He is alleged to have “pretended to be close to Chawda” suspecting a sorcerer’s role in the death of his brother Vivek Bhanu Gohil.
When asked about Gohil’s role in the murder linked to Chawda, Rajkot Rural Superintendent of Police Himkar Singh said, “Gohil knew that Chawda had killed his brother and still brought him around. He was an accomplice in the murder of four members of the same family of Mukasam. However, he had a change of heart – first, because he knew another potential victim, Abhijeet Singh Rajput, and did not want him to die; And secondly, because he was afraid that Chavda might kill him if he found out about another murder.”
Gohil has been arrested as a co-accused in the murder of the Mukasam family – Kader Ali Mukasam, his wife Farida Kader Mukasam and their son Asif Kader Mukasam – in Paddhari, Rajkot Rural Police said. SP Singh also said that Gohil Chawda was an accomplice in killing Nagma Kader Mukasam in Wankaner of Morbi and disposing his body.
Based on the information given by Gohil, 42-year-old Chawda was arrested on November 3 at 1 am on the charge of plotting the murder of Abhijitsinh Bharatkumar Rajput. He died in the custody of Sarkhez police on November 8. However, the Gujarat Police is continuing to investigate the 12 murders. It is alleged that Chawda confessed his role in the murder before dying in police custody.
Earlier, the Surendranagar police registered a case for the murder of Dipesh Patadia, Prafulla Patadia and Utsavi Patadia of Surendranagar and re-investigated the deaths of seven people due to natural causes.
The Morbi police have also filed a case regarding the murder of Nagma Kader Mukasam and hiding the body in Wankaner. On Thursday, another FIR was added to the list for the murder of three other members of Nagma’s family by the Rajkot Rural Police.
However, the question remains unanswered in the killing of five people: Raj Bawaji in Anjar (Kutch); Vivek Bhanu Gohil in Aslali in Gandhinagar as well as three members of Chavda’s own family, grandmother Mangu Bhukhubhai, mother Saroj Kanu Chawda and his uncle Sura Kaka in Surendranagar.
Meanwhile, Chavda’s custodial death is currently being investigated by ACP AB Valand of M Division of Ahmedabad city police.
