Governor takes the law into his own hands: Minister

Higher Education Minister Govi said that the state government has followed the rules while forming the search committee to appoint candidates who are eligible to be appointed vice-chancellors (vice-chancellors) in the state’s universities. Chejian said in a statement Thursday.

Responding to the instructions given by Governor RN Ravi on Wednesday that the University Grants Commission (UGC) should be nominated for the vice-chancellor search committee of Annamalai University, the minister accused the governor of misusing his position as chancellor and imposing legal suspension. Proceedings, carried out in accordance with the Statutes of the State Universities.

Mr. Chejian said the government was looking at the tendency of the governor to take the law into his own hands in his position as chancellor of the state’s universities. The governor only had the authority to recommend that a search committee be announced, but he could not form a search committee himself, Mr. Chejian pointed out.

Mr. Ravi was acting as a representative of the UGC in violation of the University Statute. In his 6-page reply, the minister said that out of 13 state-run universities, 6 are currently functioning without a vice-chancellor. He said that since the terms of vice-chancellors of Bharathidasan University and Periyar University will end in February and May, a search committee has also been formed for them as per the statutes of the university.

He said that although the UGC can recommend, the state government has the right to decide whether to accept it.
