More than three years after plans for the European Super League were scrapped due to widespread backlash, the tournament is set to be revived under a new name. According to the Telegraph, the now-branded ‘Unify League’ is likely to challenge the Champions League with free-to-watch claims offered to lure fans. It is not clear whether this concept has the support of English clubs.
According to reports, the rebranded tournament will not have automatic qualification as it was when it was first launched. Instead the organizers have proposed annual qualification for all four leagues within the Unified League. According to the Telegraph , the organizers plan to launch a streaming platform called “Unified” where fans can watch the game for free with high-quality advertising content. There’s also the option to go ad-free with a subscription-based model like Spotify.
According to the Telegraph, with the new model, A22, the Madrid-based company that currently hosts the event, is ready to approach UEFA for permission to start the tournament. Unlike 2021, A22 believes UEFA is obliged to do so by the December 2023 ruling from the European courts.
According to the Unifi League, 96 clubs will compete in three competitions. The Unified League champions will ultimately come from the top two tiers, the Star League and the Gold League. “Both will feature 16 teams who will be divided into eight groups in both cases. Those eight will each play home and away – 14 group stage fixtures. The top two clubs from each of the four groups will advance to the last eight,” the report said. is
In the knockouts, the quarter-finals will follow a home and away leg model, while the semi-finals are played in a single leg at a neutral venue and the final will also take place in the same week. Any team that reaches the finals gets to play 18 games.
