He said the federal government is trying to push the law with the “ulterior motive” of holding presidential elections that are against the spirit of the constitution. “The proposed Bill, if passed and enacted, will remove the legal checks and balances that the framers of our great Constitution put in place in the form of periodic elections to prevent the country from falling into anarchy and dictatorship. Also, state elections will lose their political significance and regional spirit and diversity will be destroyed,” Mr. Stalin added.

The DMK chief argued that the law threatened to “change Indian politics forever”. Although the BJP did not have the majority to pass the bill, Mr. Stalin said, “There is a shameless attempt to settle scores and deflect attention from the BJP’s failure to address key issues affecting the country’s progress.”

“To save India, its diversity and its constitution, all democratic forces must unite and fight against this abomination imposed under the guise of electoral reforms,” ​​he added.
