New agricultural campaign to make self-sufficient from January

A new campaign to make the province self-sufficient in vegetable production will be launched next January. The goal of the campaign is to become independent within five years.

Regional officials of the agriculture department met in Ellore on Saturday (December 14) to discuss campaign details. Officials from Alappuzha, Ernakulam and Idukki districts participated in the meeting.

Agriculture Minister P. Prasad informed that the agricultural campaign will be extended to all panchayats of the state. The program to increase self-reliance in agriculture was an important campaign. He said that the World Bank has provided a loan of Rs 1,365 to the department.

The minister said that agriculture is a key component for the development of the local economy. There will be no wasteland at the end of the campaign. He said that all available land will be brought into agriculture.

The agricultural groups formed under each Agricultural Building (Agricultural Office) will be strengthened through local bodies. Farmer Gram Sabhas will be organized with the help of local government.

The ultimate objective of the campaign is to ensure safe and adequate food supply. Organic farming practices will be encouraged, students and youths will be attracted to agricultural activities, digitalization of data will be done by formulating agricultural action plans using data available at the local level.

Latest technologies will be applied in agricultural production, and new schemes will be developed. Organic, natural and carbon neutral farming will be promoted and supported.
