Senior officials of municipal bodies across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) on Tuesday reviewed various measures implemented to improve air quality.
The fifth meeting of the Air Pollution Control Coordinating Committee has been called amid growing concern over the declining air quality index (AQI) across MMR.
In the meeting, Mumbai’s municipal commissioner and state-appointed administrator Bhushan Gagarani reiterated the Bombay High Court’s directive to increase vigilance in areas where AQI has worsened.
The meeting, coordinated by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), brought together the relevant agencies to monitor air pollution mitigation measures in the respective areas.
Held at the BMC headquarters, the meeting saw the presence of Maharashtra Pollution Control Board Member Secretary Avinash Dhakne, Navi Mumbai Municipality (NMMC) Chief Kailash Shinde, Mira Bhayander Municipality (MBMC) Commissioner Sanjay Katkar and other officials.
Calling for strict action, Gagarani said special attention should be paid to areas where AQI has deteriorated significantly. “Contributing factors to air pollution within 5 km of that area should be taken into account. Controlling air pollution is a collective responsibility of all bodies in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region,” he said.
As per the directions of the High Court, a coordination committee was formed under the chairmanship of the BMC Commissioner to control air pollution control in MMR.
