Interventional Procedures in Premature Infants at Kochi Hospital

A low birth weight premature baby has been successfully operated on at Lycee Hospital here.

A child born to parents in Kanjani, Thrissur was referred from a local hospital with a diagnosis of prenatal heart disease. Her birth weight was 935 grams, according to a statement issued by the hospital on Tuesday.

The child was taken for PDA (patent ductus arteriosus) stenting (a procedure to treat infants and children with congenital heart disease and duct-dependent pulmonary circulation) given the worsening condition.

A coronary stent was deployed in the PDA. The baby’s satiety is improved and prostaglandins can be inhibited. The next day the baby was taken off the ventilator and fed. The procedure was conducted under the Kerala government’s ‘Hrudayam’ scheme under the leadership of Dr Anil SR, head of the Department of Pediatric Cardiology, it said.
