In Maharashtra, a man committed suicide due to moneylender abuse, Mumbai News reported

A 57-year-old contract employee of the Maharashtra Excise Department allegedly committed suicide by jumping in front of a local train in Mumbai, allegedly under harassment from private moneylenders, police said on Monday.

The government railway police has registered an FIR against three people, including a couple and a woman, on charges of abetting suicide.

The dead body of Shahu Sadashiv Mane was found on the railway tracks of GTB Nagar railway station on Sunday morning.

His wife called him on his mobile after the police found out that Mane Sion lives in Pratishka Nagar and did not return home till Saturday night.

The phone was answered by a policeman who said he had found her body. His son Vinay and his wife rushed him to KEM Hospital where he was declared brought dead. A suicide note was found in his pocket, police said.

An official said that Mane was under stress after he could not pay Rs 3.5 lakh he had taken with Manisha Dethe, 40, of Sardarnagar in Sion Koliwada.

He was under pressure to take a loan after the food and milk business he started suffered losses due to the lockdown due to Covid-19. It is said that the loan was taken at nine percent interest per month.

Manisha Dethe and her husband Sudhir Dethe used to come to Mane’s house and abuse them in front of the family members, an official said. When he could not pay the loan, Mane started taking loans from others.

According to the family, the Dethe couple has started putting pressure on Mane saying that the loan amount has increased. “Manisha Dethe and her husband abused her and threatened to kill her if she did not pay the debt,” the officer said.

On Saturday morning again, Manisha Dethe reached Mane’s house and refused to go home until the debt was paid. Mane’s wife called his mobile number and informed that Manisha Dethe is waiting at home.

Due to fear, Mane did not return home until Saturday night, police said. Mane committed suicide by jumping in front of a moving local train under the pressure of non-payment of debt, the official said.
