Former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik advocated a return to ballot paper voting

Bhubaneswar: Former Odisha chief minister and BJD president Naveen Patnaik on Thursday called for a probe into alleged anomalies in electronic voting machines (EVMs) and renewed his party’s demand for a return to ballot paper voting.

Speaking at an event organized on the occasion of Biju Janata Dal’s (BJD) 28th anniversary, Patnaik stressed on transparency in the election process.

“Why is the BJP concerned about these allegations when no specific allegations have been leveled against them? Their reaction suggests there might be something wrong,” said Patnaik, now Leader of Opposition in the Odisha Assembly.

Responding to questions on whether EVM tampering contributed to the BJD’s defeat in the 2024 general elections, he asserted, “Any such allegations should be thoroughly investigated.”

As the BJD celebrated its 28th foundation day, Patnaik expressed his gratitude for the people’s continued support. “We are receiving hearty wishes from the people, which further strengthens our commitment to their welfare,” he said.

Asked about succession planning within the party, the veteran leader dismissed speculation. ‘I am thinking of being active in the party for a long time and I have not thought much about the successor,’ he clarified.

On the controversial “One Nation, One Election” bill, Patnaik revealed that the BJD is closely examining the proposal. “We are assessing its potential implications before taking a formal position,” he said.

The former chief minister also responded to Union Minister Giriraj Singh’s support for awarding him the Bharat Ratna. “I have not heard of this development,” he remarked. “However, the BJD and the people of Odisha strongly believe that the great leader Biju Patnaik should be awarded the Bharat Ratna for his immense contribution to the nation.”

Patnaik told Union Home Minister Amit Shah. criticized recent comments about BR Ambedkar, calling them “unfortunate” and asked for respect for the architect of the Indian Constitution.
