A one-month-old male deer that came with a goat was rescued by a shepherd at Melpakkam village near Arakkonam town in Ranipet on Wednesday.
Forest officials said that 68-year-old K Pachaimmal of Melapakkam village took 20 goats to the outskirts of the village for grazing on Tuesday. She came late in the evening. When she went to get water for the animals, Pachaimal saw a young deer in the herd. βPachaimal was scared when she found the animal. When he was young, the spotted deer used to go to his house with goats,’ said R. Forest Officer (Arcot). Saravanan Babu said. Hindu.
Panchaimal went to the Melapakkam railway station where she narrated the incident to Station Master (SM) S. Gautam, who advised her to hand over the animal to the forest officials. She handed over the deer to the station master saying that she did not know any forest officer. The rescued animal was safely cared for in the station master’s cabin at the railway station.
On Wednesday, Mr. Gautam handed over the animal to the forest team headed by Forester G Duraimurugan. Later, the animal was safely released in Banvaram Reserved Forest (RF) near Arkonam.
Forest officials said Melpakkam village is situated on the banks of Palar River along the banks of two Reserved Forests (RFs) namely Banavaram and Ammur RFs. The area is a habitat for spotted deer as forest teams have spotted deer in their hundreds during regular patrols. Most of the farmers and wage labor residents were alerted by the forest officials to save the wild species from stray dogs and poachers and advised them to alert the forest officials.
