Andhra Pradesh Medical Council Registrar I. Ramesh said the council followed all the rules laid down under the National Medical Commission regarding issuance of Permanent Registrations (PRs) to Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs) in Andhra Pradesh.
In response to a story titled ‘Doctors of a Lesser State’ published in Hindu On December 20, Dr. Ramesh referred to the Kerala High Court judgment which upheld the Kerala State Medical Council’s (KSMC) notification which made a two-year internship mandatory for students who missed their classes.
In the letter, Dr. Ramesh said the current scenario of halting the process of issuing PR to some students is as per the NMC guidelines issued in November and December 2023, wherein some FMGs “have to do their internships for one more year. They could not compensate their online study period with offline clinical training.” He added that the NMC also insists on a one-year clerkship because “students lack proper training”.
Pointing out that APMC cannot ignore the notice of NMC. Ramesh said that the group of students who are not properly compensated for online studies are putting pressure on APMC and the government for PR.
