A 26-year-old youth allegedly set himself on fire at a roundabout near the Railway Building near the Parliament Building on Wednesday. The victim, Jitendra, is from Baghpat in Uttar Pradesh and has suffered 90 percent burns. He is currently being treated at the hospital, police said.
According to the fire department, a call was received about the incident around 3:30 p.m. The fire brigade immediately reached the spot, but by then the security personnel deployed there had reached to save the person.
Devesh Mahala, DCP (New Delhi) said, “The person tried to set himself on fire at Rail Bhavan Roundabout. The local police and railway police along with some citizens immediately put out the fire and rushed the person to the hospital. He reached Delhi on Wednesday afternoon.
The DCP added that so far they suspect that the person was angry because of some personal enmity in his hometown. The police said that the person reached Shahdara railway station around 1 pm. A normal ticket of Rs 15 was found in his pocket.
‘Some papers have been found on his person. Three cases were found pending against him in Baghpat and he was angry because he alleged that the local police did not investigate the incident properly,’ Mahala added.
