Trump has threatened to impose reciprocal tariffs on India for imposing too many tariffs

The newly elected President of the United States, Donald Trump, has once again warned India to impose reciprocal taxes on the country.

Trump has in the past described India as a “tariff king” and accused New Delhi of charging “high tariffs” on US products.

At a press conference in Mar-a-Lago, he said, “Reciprocal. If they tax us, we tax them the same amount. They tax us, we tax them. And they tax us. In almost all cases, they are. Taxing us, and we We have not taxed them.”

The latest warning comes months after Trump called India a “very big abuser” of tariffs, highlighting continued friction in the US-India trade dynamic.

This firm stance underscores Trump’s broader strategy of ensuring equality in trade deals, which has been a hallmark of Trump’s policies during his presidency from 2017 to 2021.

India has repeatedly criticized the US for imposing high tariffs on imports. In his latest remarks, Trump specifically cited India and Brazil as countries with excessive tariffs.

Trump said that other countries like India and Brazil will charge 100 to 200 more duties when they send bicycles to the US. Charge the same in the manner and in return.

This is not the first time Trump has flagged India’s tariffs. Trump has previously referred to India as a “tariff king”, citing specific cases such as high import duties on Harley-Davidson motorcycles.

Later, India lowered tariffs but Trump criticized it, saying “India charges too much.”
