28 fishermen from Idinthakarai, a fishing village in Tirunelveli district, who were detained by Bahraini authorities on September 11 for crossing the maritime border, have been released. They arrived at the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport in Kerala on Wednesday (December 18, 2024) night, Tamil Nadu Fisheries Department officials said.

Due to various measures taken by the Union and State Governments, the imprisonment period of fishermen has been reduced from six months to three months. Earlier this month, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said the 28 detained fishermen would return to India after completing repatriation formalities.

On their arrival, the fishermen were greeted by Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Speaker M. Appavu and Tirunelveli MP C Robert Bruce welcomed.
