The School of Social Sciences and Languages ​​(SSL) of the Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) organized a one-day regional seminar on occupational health hazards of women workers in the agricultural sector at its campus in Vellore on Wednesday.

The seminar, conducted with the support of the National Commission for Women, was inaugurated by Tamil Nadu State Commission for Women Chairman AS Kumari.

In her inaugural address, Ms. Kumari said that women are working in various fields including agriculture. Due to the use of pesticides and other chemicals in crops, women in the agricultural sector are at greater health risk. “The central and state governments have enacted many laws to protect women’s rights. Women should be aware of these laws and work to protect their rights,” she said.

Besides, she said that the Tamil Nadu State Women’s Commission has been creating awareness among women about various laws protecting women’s rights in the society. Many women, especially from rural areas, have also sent their complaints to the commission. “Women in distress can contact the women’s helpline: 181 to get support and assistance,” she said.
