Two villages fight over ownership of ‘holy’ buffalo, police conduct DNA tests

Two villages in the district, Kunibelakere and Kulagatte – are fighting over buffaloes dedicated to the temple and worshiped by many devotees.

A strange phenomenon of buffaloes has been observed in Karnataka’s Devanagere district these days. Two villages in the district, Kunibelakere and Kulagatte – are fighting over buffaloes dedicated to the temple and worshiped by many devotees.

Police are conducting DNA tests to find out the real owner of the buffalo. The two villages are 40 km away from each other. At the same time, the police seized the buffalo in Shivamogga Goshala.

Not the first case

This is not the first time these villages in Karnataka have fought over buffaloes. In 2021, a buffalo was dedicated to Kariamma Devi, the presiding deity of Kunibelakere village. In the nearby Belkere village, a buffalo has been found simultaneously with the news of the disappearance of a buffalo from Kulagatte village.

So the villagers of Kulagatte took away the buffalo claiming to be the owner. A villager, Madappa Rangannavar, also claimed that he had been missing for two months.

Kunibelakere villagers have also claimed their rights over the buffalo. Because of this, there was a clash between the two villages and the police intervened.

The fight was not only over the ownership of the animal, but also over its age. Kunibelakere villagers claimed her age to be eight years old while Kulagatte villagers said she was three years old. After examining the buffalo, the doctor claimed that the buffalo was more than 6 years old. This cemented the claim of the Kunibelakere villagers, but was opposed by the Kulagatte village.

However, Kunibelakere villagers have found seven people of Kulagatte village guilty and registered a theft case and demanded a DNA test. Backing up their claim, the Kunibelakere villagers said that they had the offspring of a buffalo.

According to Dunder Tipesh, a resident of Kunibelakere, the case has arrived at the Davangere SP office. Additional SP Vijay Kumar Santosh said that the DNA sample has been received and the problem will be solved after the results of the test.
