In separate incidents in Madhya Pradesh’s Umaria and Balaghat districts, two people died after being attacked by a tiger, officials said on Sunday.
A 45-year-old man named Khairuha Bega was killed by a tiger in Khitoli range of Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve in Umaria district.
Sukhram Uike, a 55-year-old farmer from Balaghat, was mauled by another big cat while he was working in his farm at Ambejhari village under Tirodi Tehsil on Sunday afternoon.
Baiga went missing after leaving her brother’s house for work on Friday afternoon, said Swasti Sri Jain, officer of Khitoli range (Umaria district).
He said that the skull, parts of hands and clothes were found at the resort in Kuluhabah area on Sunday.
The forest officer said that his family identified the body as that of Baiga.
Jain said that the pugmark of a tiger was found in the nearby area.
Forest teams have been pressed to prevent human-big cat conflicts in the area to search for tigers, said a range official.
Sub-Divisional Officer of the Forest Department BR Sirsam said that Uike was killed by a tiger in his farm around 3 pm on Sunday. His oxen ran away to his house, raising concerns for his safety.
He said that his family members reached the farm and found that the tiger had eaten Uike’s body.
Soon after, a team of forest officers reached the spot and forced the tiger to run away from the spot, he said.
