The district unit of the Kerala Shramik Journalists Association staged a protest rally at the office of the District Superintendent of Police (Kochi City) on Tuesday against the alleged directive of the Crime Branch to Malayalam daily journalists to surrender their mobile phones. He published a report in the newspaper.
The rally which started from near the press club was stopped by the police by placing a barricade in front of St. Teresa’s College. Senior journalist and former MP Sebastian Paul inaugurated the protest meeting. He accused the police of pressuring the journalists to violate the basic principle of journalism that sources of information should not be disclosed. He called the police action ‘anti-democratic’ and ‘encroachment on media freedom’.
