The Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill will be introduced by Union Law Minister Arjun Meghwal.
The ‘One Nation, One Election’ bill to hold Lok Sabha and State Assembly elections simultaneously is being introduced in the Lok Sabha today (Tuesday). The listed agenda of the Lok Sabha on Tuesday includes the Constitution Amendment Bill regarding simultaneous elections.
The Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill will be introduced by Union Law Minister Arjun Meghwal.
Meghwal is likely to introduce bills tomorrow to further amend the Government of Union Territories Act, 1963, the Delhi Government’s National Capital Territory Act, 1991 and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Act, 2019. Assemblies intended to hold elections simultaneously in Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir and Puducherry. Earlier this month, the Union Cabinet approved the ‘One Nation One Election’ Bill.
While the BJP and its allies support the bill, several opposition parties, including the Congress, the Trinamool Congress and the DMK, oppose it. The Union Cabinet had accepted the high-level committee’s recommendations for simultaneous elections in September. The panel was headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind.
These recommendations were mentioned in the report of the High Level Committee chaired by former President Kovind. The committee has recommended holding the election simultaneously in two phases. In the first phase, it is recommended to hold Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha elections simultaneously and to hold elections to local bodies (panchayats and municipalities) within 100 days of the general elections. He said that there should be a common voter list for all elections.
