Seat blocking allegation: Karnataka High Court directs police not to take coercive action against BMS College of Engineering

The Karnataka High Court has directed not to take any coercive action or immediate action against the BMS College of Engineering in connection with a First Information Report (FIR) filed by the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) regarding “blocking of seats in engineering courses in some colleges.

However, the court has directed the college administration to cooperate with the police investigation.

Justice M. Nagaprasanna passed the interim order on a petition filed by the college, which questioned the FIR registered by the KEA on November 13.

Optional entry

It was alleged that the passwords and secret keys issued to the candidates were used by some persons for “optional entry” and such candidates then withdrew their choice of colleges and courses, resulting in withdrawal of the special seat. College for admission. It was alleged that some colleges, including the petitioner-college, benefited from the “seat blocking scam”.

Refuting the allegation, the petitioner-college said that out of 2,760 engineering seats of the college, 1,282 seats were proposed to be filled through KEA and 1,100 seats were filled by the management. Despite the college’s request, KEA could not fill those seats, leaving 108 seats vacant out of 1,282 seats.

Normally, the applicant-college gets the remaining seats for allotment through management after completing all rounds of counseling through KEA. However, in the current academic year, the management did not get a chance to fill the vacant seats as the KEA took action on the order of the Supreme Court and set the last date of admission as October 23, 2024.
