New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday expressed grief over the loss of life in a boat accident off the coast of Mumbai and announced a relief of Rs 2 lakh to the next of kin of each deceased. 13 people died and 99 people were rescued by the Navy. The ship collided with a ferry off the coast of Mumbai on Wednesday, the navy said.

“The boat accident in Mumbai is tragic. Condolences to the bereaved families. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured. Authorities are helping those affected,” Modi said in a post on X by his office.

“The Prime Minister has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from PMNRF for the next of kin of each deceased in a boat accident in Mumbai. Rs 50,000 will be given to the injured,” the PMO said.

Search and rescue efforts were immediately launched by the Navy in coordination with the Coast Guard and Marine Police. According to the Navy, four naval helicopters, 11 naval ships, one coast guard boat and three marine police boats were involved in the rescue operation.

Survivors picked up by naval and civil craft in the area have been shifted to nearby jetties and hospitals. So far 99 survivors have been rescued, it added.

According to the Navy, 13 people, including a Navy personnel and two OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) personnel on board the Navy ship, were killed in the accident.
