Parbhani violence: Lawyer dies in judicial custody

In the aftermath of the Parbhani violence, a 35-year-old man identified as Somnath Suryavanshi died in judicial custody on Sunday (Monday 15, 2024).

Somnath was arrested after violence broke out in Maharashtra’s Parbhani district after insulting a replica of the constitution. He is one of the 50 people arrested by the Parbhani police from December 11 to December 12. His brother Premnath Suryavanshi said, ‘He came to Parbhani a few days ago to participate in the law examination.

His brother said that after he was sent to judicial custody, a bail application was filed in the court. He had nothing to do with the December 11 movement and picked up other men from his slum, said his lawyer Pawan Jondh.

Somnath is a resident of Pune and belongs to a nomadic tribe – the Wadar community. Although the police claimed that he was taken to a local hospital because of chest pain, local activists said that the arrested person was beaten by the police.
