The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) will start concreting work at the Mumbai Central Bus Stand from Monday to improve infrastructure and address long-standing operational challenges. This project under the statewide initiative to modernize 183 bus depots will be completed within the next two months.
The project is being done in collaboration with the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC), which has allocated ₹600 crore to modernize bus stations across the state. At Mumbai Central, about 1,900 square meters of the bus stand will be concreted at an estimated cost of Rs 1.64 crore.
Currently, around 155 buses from depots outside Mumbai ply daily from Mumbai Central, carrying thousands of passengers. However, buses from the Mumbai Central Depot will continue to operate from the existing premises.
These services will be temporarily re-routed to other bus stations to facilitate uninterrupted operations during the concretization work. The phased re-routing is meant to minimize disruption to commuters while ensuring smooth operations during the construction period.
“To minimize inconvenience, during the construction period, these routes will be operated temporarily from Parel, Dadar, and nearby stations like Kurla and Nehru Nagar,” said an MSRTC spokesperson.
The project aims to address issues such as potholes, waterlogging and dust which have been a constant problem for passengers and bus operations. By the end of the project, these improvements are expected to create a smoother and more efficient travel experience for passengers.
Once the work is completed, all routes will be restored to Mumbai Central Bus Stand. This upgrade is expected to significantly enhance the public transport infrastructure, which will benefit both commuters and the long-term operations of MSRTC.
