Minister Khandre’s request to protect wildlife in the mining area

Bellary: In order to minimize the adverse environmental impact in the mine-affected areas, Forest, Biology and Environment Minister Ishwar B. Khandre has directed the officials to prepare a draft plan to establish a botanical garden in each taluk.

During a progress review meeting at the Ballari Forest Department office, the minister directed the officials to use the funds received from the Karnataka Mining Environment Restoration Corporation (KMERC) to devise actionable strategies to address the environmental damage.

Minister Khandre emphasized on implementing wildlife conservation measures in mining areas and maintaining water pits to prevent wildlife from lack of water in summer.

He questioned the officials about the number of C category mines in the Ballari region, the extent of forest land allotted to mining companies for compensatory afforestation and the progress in tree plantation efforts. He also asked for details about geotagging of valuable trees like sandalwood, teak and rosewood planted on forest borders and scolded the officials for failing to give a satisfactory reply.

The minister directed officials to plant and grow more saplings in Davangere, Koppal, Ballari, Vijayanagar and Chitradurga divisions. He emphasized on the need to plant seedlings in nurseries to effectively address the demands of farmers.

Minister Khandre expressed his concern over the report of forest encroachment due to excavation beyond the designated area. He directed officials to use satellite imagery and KML maps to monitor and protect forest land from such encroachments.
