After being held to a 1-1 draw at home by Pep Guardiola’s defending champions Everton, mighty Manchester City continued to drop points in the Premier League.
City’s slump has seen them win just once in their last 13 games in all competitions and they are provisionally sixth in the table with 28 points, below Liverpool’s 11, who have two games in hand. Everton are 15th, five points above the drop zone, but have now earned three impressive, consecutive draws against Arsenal, Chelsea and City.
Bernardo Silva scored an early goal but City could only manage a point in their Boxing Day opener in England’s top flight on Thursday. Silva scored in the 14th minute when Jeremy Docu played the ball in behind the Toffees’ defense and Silva fired into the far corner from a tight angle. But Elliman Ndia equalized for Everton in the 36th minute when he took a touch to settle the ball, then fired a shot into the top right corner from the center of the box.
City fans thought they had won in the second half when Erling Haaland took the lead from the penalty spot after Seamus Coleman’s tackle on Savinho, but goalkeeper Jordan Pickford dived perfectly to save the shot. Haaland headed home the rebound, but it was chalked up for offside.
“We played really well but we are now in that period where it happens, we create, we arrive first. But yeah, keep going,” City manager Pep Guardiola told Amazon’Prime after the game. “The performance against that team was really good offensively and defensively. We scored a lot of goals inside the 18 yard box but unfortunately we didn’t get the result we wanted.
