A committee headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a meeting here on Wednesday to select the next chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), sources said.
They also said that Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and party leader Rahul Gandhi attended the meeting as Leaders of Opposition in Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha respectively.
After the tenure of Justice (retired) Arun Kumar Mishra ended on June 1, the post of Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission is vacant.
Justice Mishra, a former Supreme Court judge, served as the eighth chairman of the rights panel and was appointed to its top post in June 2021.
According to the law governing the NHRC, the committee to select the head of the NHRC is chaired by the Prime Minister, while it consists of the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, the Home Minister, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha and the Deputy Speaker of the state.
