Indian parliamentarians protested at the Parliament premises demanding an apology from Amit Shah for Ambedkar’s comments

Several Bharat Bloc MPs, including Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, staged a protest at the Parliament premises on Wednesday (Dec 18, 2024) apologizing for Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks which they claimed insulted BR Ambedkar.

The MPs lined up in front of the Parliament’s Makardwar steps carrying pictures of Ambedkar.

They chanted slogans like ‘Jai Bheem’,’The Constitution of the Union will not work. and ‘Amit Shah Apologize’.

MPs from Congress, DMK, RJD, Left, AAP and others participated in the protest.

The Congress on Tuesday (Dec 17, 2024) accused Mr Shah’s comments during the debate on the Constitution in the Rajya Sabha that BJP and RSS leaders showed “a lot of hatred” towards Ambedkar and demanded an apology from him.

Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi said that those who believed in Manusmriti would definitely be against Ambedkar.

Congress general secretary communication in-charge Jairam Ramesh shared a video snippet on X of Mr. Shah’s speech in the Upper House.

“Now a fashion has become – Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar. If God took these names, he would have got heaven for seven generations. Congress President Mr. Kharge had also criticized Mr. Shah and said that the Home Minister’s “insult” of Babasaheb proved once again that against the BJP-RSS tricolor, their forefathers opposed Ashok Chakra and opposed the people. Sangh Parivar wants to implement Manusmriti instead of Constitution of India from day one.

“Babasaheb Dr. Ambedkar G He didn’t let this happen, that’s why there is so much hatred towards him, said Mr. Kharge.

“The ministers of the Modi government should understand very well that for millions of people like me, Babasaheb Ambedkar is no less than God… He is and will always be the messiah of Dalits, tribals, backward classes, minorities and the poor,” Kharge wrote in Hindi on X.

The home minister attacked the Congress in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, saying the party has treated the Constitution as a family’s “private fiefdom” and “cheated” with Parliament.

Concluding the two-day debate on “75 years of glorious journey of the Constitution of India”, Shah blasted the Congress for its politics of appeasement and claimed that the party wanted to break the 50% quota limit to provide reservation to Muslims.

He also asked the Congress if it supported the Muslim Personal Law and accused the party of never working for the benefit of backward classes. Mr. Shah emphasized that the BJP has already introduced the Samana Civil Samhita (Uniform Civil Code) in Uttarakhand and will implement it in all states.
