A 25-year-old jewelery shop salesman was killed after two unidentified men shot at him and his employer in Shahpur in Maharashtra’s Thane district, a police official said on Sunday.
Officials said the incident took place when the deceased Dinesh Kumar Manram Chaudhary, his boss and another person called one day and were waiting outside Mahalakshmi Jewelers in Gotheghar area at 10:30 pm on Saturday.
“Two motorcycle-borne persons fired a few rounds, injuring Chaudhary, who died shortly afterwards at a hospital in Thane. He died on Sunday morning. They stole the bag that Chaudhary was carrying,’ said the police station official.
Chaudhary was a salesman of Mahalakshmi Jewellers, Senior Inspector Jitendra Thakur said the cause of the incident could not be revealed.
Investigation has started under the leadership of Deputy Superintendent of Police Milind Shinde. A blockade has been set up at various places in the district to catch the attackers. CCTV footage of the area as well as the Mumbai-Nashik highway is being scrutinized to trace their escape route,” the official said.
Police said that the assailants threatened a woman vegetable seller who came to help Chaudhary.
The incident of shooting has spread widespread dissatisfaction in the business community of this area and the Shahpur Business Association has demanded the police to arrest the culprits as soon as possible.
Shops in the area were closed in protest throughout the day and the traders took out a silent rally to Shahpur Police Station.
If the culprits are not arrested within 48 hours, the movement will be strengthened. Such anarchy cannot be allowed to continue,” said former MLA Pandurang Barora, participating in the protest march.
