Karimnagar: Cyber crime officials arrested 21-year-old Mohammad Awad, a Zomato delivery boy, for helping cybercriminals to dupe residents of Godavarikhani.
DSP M. Venkataraman said that a woman from Sriramnagar Colony had filed a complaint of fraud to deposit Rs 31.6 lakh on the pretext of part-time online work. Initially promising a return of Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000 for every Rs 10,000 deposited, the scammers convinced him that it was easy to make money. After her investment, the criminals stopped communicating, prompting her to report the fraud.
Inspector J. Krishnamurthy and N. Investigators including Srinivas used advanced technology to track down the suspect at Sohail Restaurant in Malakpet, Hyderabad. During interrogation, Awad admitted that he was instructed by Ilyas to open three bank accounts and promised to pay Rs 300 for each deposit of Rs 1 lakh.
On further investigation, it was revealed that Elias was cheating innocent people from abroad by falsely luring them with employment. The police are conducting further investigations to identify and arrest other persons involved in the incident.
