Sandeep Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, and Abhijit Mandal, former OC of Tala Police, have been released on bail in connection with the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar campus.
The ACJM court in Sealdah, Kolkata granted bail after the CBI failed to submit the charge sheet within 90 days. Bail was granted on a surety bond of Rs 2,000 each and on the condition that the accused appear before the CBI when summoned.
However, Ghosh, who is sued in another case of financial irregularities, will have to stay in jail.
In the court, the CBI said that their investigation against the accused is ongoing.
After the incident on August 9 this year, protests were held across the country. A day after the incident, Kolkata police arrested civic volunteer Sanjay Roy.
Later, the CBI arrested Ghosh and Mandal in the case for destroying evidence and trying to present it as suicide.
