Each park under GHMC to get unique ID

Hyderabad: Each park under the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) jurisdiction will get a unique ID and this will happen after they are geo-fenced.

Geo-fencing of the park to prevent encroachment will be started soon and bills to the contractor for maintaining the park will be issued following feedback from walkers, joggers and members of the Colony Welfare Association. A plan is also underway to remove pigeon feeding points in the city.

All open areas marked on the layout will be geo fenced. According to norms, all open areas marked as lung space in any layout are by default GHMC properties and there these land parcels marked for lung space and facilities are illegally sold as straw bits.

“Such plots with an area of more than 2,000 square yards will be developed as parks,” said a GHMC official.

According to GHMC records, the city has 1,579 parks and out of them, corporation officials said 770 parks are maintained by Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) and Colony Welfare Associations (CWAs).

Parks and open spaces marked for lung space and facilities will be geo-fenced with the help of Town Planning Wing of the Corporation.

Other measures to protect the park include taking immediate action against illegal constructions within the park.

“While many parks will be physically fenced, the remaining parks will be fenced,” said a GHMC official. GHMC Commissioner K Ilambarithi held a meeting with the officials on Wednesday and directed to take the above measures to prevent encroachment of parks.

In the meeting, he directed the officers and employees to visit the parks of their area at least once a month, hold meetings with RWA, CWA and submit a report to the Additional Commissioner (AC) of Urban Biodiversity Branch by 5th of every month.

The work related to the protection of the park also includes a proposal to ban plastic in the park premises and stop anti-social activities with the help of security guards.

The corporation also wants to keep the green fund with itself instead of being managed by the state forest department.
