The protestors have demanded to extend the exam saying that the classes have been conducted for only 60 days and that the syllabus is not completed, saying that it is less than the mandatory requirements.
Several law students staged a protest outside Delhi University’s law faculty early on Tuesday demanding extension of the exam by 10 days. The students reportedly blocked the faculty and other staff from exiting the gate, after which the Delhi Police had to escort the dean and other officials.
The protestors have demanded to extend the exam saying that the classes have been conducted for only 60 days and that the syllabus is not completed, saying that it is less than the mandatory requirement. Deputy Commissioner of Police (North), Delhi Police, Raja Banthia interacted with the protesting law students and informed them that the exams have been postponed for now and revised dates will be announced.
He said that the police arrived after being called by the DU administration and the law faculty proctor. “We received a request from the DU administration and proctor of the law faculty that they (faculty and other staff) were not allowed to come out because the students had blocked the exit. The police reached there – created a corridor and helped them (faculty and staff including the dean) out. Jan – Students are outraged by this and are protesting,” the DCP said.
“According to the information I have, the date of the examination which was supposed to be held from December 26 has been postponed and now a committee will be formed to decide the date of the examination,” he said. Earlier, the law students had said that they were conducting a peaceful protest… ‘There is a rule that classes should be conducted for 90 days in a semester, but classes have not been conducted for 60 days, even after two months, the course has not been completed even though a guest professor has been appointed, classes are being taken at a fast pace and students are not able to comply.
He said, “It was our request to the dean that the examination to be held from December 26 would be held from January 10. We put a memorandum and he had already agreed,” he added.
Another student protestor accused the police of lathi charge and tear gas. “When there is a movement, the dean goes on leave and does not worry about the students. We requested the dean not to leave until further notice. There are 9,000 students here, the police has entered the campus. We are not the culprits of lathi charge and teargas firing,” he said.
