Boat capsizes in Mumbai, one dead, search for missing passengers

One passenger died and 74 were rescued as a search was underway for more than a dozen people aboard a boat that capsized off the coast of Mumbai on Wednesday (Dec 18, 2024), police said.

A police official said the boat, named Neelkamal, was on its way to Elephanta Island, a popular tourist destination near Mumbai. He said that a small boat hit Neelkamal around 4 pm.

The Navy and Coast Guard have launched a massive rescue operation, with 11 naval boats and three boats of the Marine Police and one boat of the Coast Guard deployed in the area, a defense official said.

Officials informed that four helicopters were also involved in the search and rescue operation.

Police, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority staff and fishermen from the area are also involved in the rescue operation, the official said.
