Assam Congress president Bhupen Kumar Borah on Saturday (December 21, 2024) requested Chief Minister Himanta Vishwa Sharma to provide a government job on compassionate ground to the widow of a party leader who died during a protest event.

Congress leader Mridul Islam died on Wednesday (December 18, 2024) during the ‘Raj Bhavan Chalo’ protest, with the opposition party alleging that he was a victim of “police high-handedness”. The police fired tear gas at the protestors, in which some Congress workers and journalists were injured.

In a letter to Mr Sharma, Mr Borah claimed Islam’s death was a “direct result of excessive force” by the police.

“Irrespective of our political differences, it is a great irony that a political activist who was engaged in the service of democracy died at the hands of the state apparatus,” he said.

Stating that Islam had left behind his wife and two young children, the Congress chief requested Mr. Sharma to give “a suitable government job” to Islam’s widow Hamida Parbin in his home district Kamrup (Rural) district on compassionate grounds as per her merits.

“I look forward to receiving a positive response from you. I will be personally grateful if you show your compassion to the bereaved widow,” added Mr. Borah.
