Andhra Pradesh is decked up for grand Christmas celebrations

Visakhapatnam: Andhra Pradesh is full of excitement as the state gears up for the grand celebration of Christmas. From the historic churches of Visakhapatnam to the vibrant congregations of Vijayawada, the festive season promises a delightful blend of spirituality, community bonding and cultural heritage.

Visakhapatnam, the coastal city known for its century-old churches, preparations are in full swing. Iconic landmarks such as St. Paul’s Church, Ross Hill Church, St. John’s Church, and St. Anthony’s Church are at the heart of the festival. These historic churches, known for their architectural grandeur and spiritual significance, are tastefully decorated with lights, stars and Christmas cribs.

St. Paul’s Church, located near the Voltaire Club and the Governor’s House, stands as a beacon of Christmas cheer. With a history spanning over 180 years, the church lights up Voltaire Junction with its vibrant decorations and melodious carols, creating a magical atmosphere. Ross Hill Church, perched on top of a hill, offers breathtaking views of the city and harbor area. Built in 1864 for an English judge, Monsieur Ros, and later converted into a chapel, it is a peaceful haven for worshipers and tourists. The special mass held here offers a deep sense of divinity.

St. John’s Church, which was founded in 1846 with funds from the East India Company near the old post office, is another highlight. Designed by Sir Arthur Cotton, the church has exquisite stained-glass paintings from Europe and teak wood interiors imported from Burma. The old pipe organ kept here is playing, adding to its old world charm. Similarly, St. Anthony’s Church, built in 1852 near Jagdamba, is the center of the festival for the Tamil-speaking Catholics. Known for its community spirit and educational initiatives, it attracts visitors with warm, inclusive celebrations.

Meanwhile, Vijayawada is witnessing equally vibrant preparations. Major churches in the city, Gunadala Matha Shrine, CSI All Saints Church, Philadelphia AG Church, and Zion Fellowship Church, are decked out in festive decorations. At St. Paul’s Basilica Church, a unique 4D storytelling experience is drawing crowds. Presented by Sunday School, this initiative brings Bible stories to life with immersive illustrations such as Noah’s Ark, the parting of the Red Sea and scenes of the Nativity.

Pastor Mani Kiran of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church shared details of special services planned for the season. “The Christmas Eve Mass begins at 7:30 p.m., while the Christmas Day service begins at 10:30 a.m. For New Year’s Eve, the night service will last until 2 a.m., followed by morning prayers,” he said.

The season is also a time for family gatherings and acts of kindness. โ€œChristmas is the biggest holiday for us. We come together, sing carols, bake cakes, and visit orphanages to share our joy,โ€ said Tejashwi of Gannavaram.

With a combination of historical charm, modern creativity, and heartfelt devotion, Andhra Pradesh’s Christmas celebrations promise a memorable experience for locals and visitors alike.
