Shimla received its second snowfall of the season on Monday morning, cheering tourists and raising hopes of an increase in the number of visitors in the coming days. The city received its first snowfall of 2.5 cm on December 9.
A senior official of the Shimla Meteorological Department said, “Light snowfall with one or two moderate snowfalls in Shimla and nearby areas is very likely to continue in the next four-five hours. This information has also been shared with the local Shimla administration.”
According to Hotel Association of Shimla, hotel occupancy in the city is currently around 55 percent and it is expected to increase further in the coming days. The Shimla administration expects around 500,000 vehicles to enter in the next 20 days, mainly on December 25, December 31, and January 1, running until January 20.
On December 17, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Anupam Kashyap said, “To ensure better facilities for both locals and tourists, a well-planned traffic strategy has been designed. In the meeting, a detailed discussion was held on traffic arrangements from November 20 to December 20. Chopal, Rampur, Crash barriers and other safety measures will be implemented in Shimla city and its surrounding areas with high accident rates. A proposal of Rs 40 lakh per area will be prepared and sent to the government within a week.”
