Asaduddin Owaisi-led AIMIM is considering fielding jailed 2020 northeast Delhi riot accused Shah Rukh Pathan as its candidate in the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections, party leaders said on Wednesday (Dec 25, 2024).
However, the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has not taken any decision on Pathan’s candidature, they said.
AIMIM Delhi unit president Shoaib Jami said PTI The party is considering the name of Pathan but no decision has been taken yet.
AIMIM recently fielded 2020 riots accused Tahir Hussain from Mustafabad constituency, after former AAP councilor Owaisi joined the party.
On Monday, Jaimi met Pathan’s family and shared a photo of the meeting on Facebook.
On Wednesday, he also said that AIMIM plans to contest 12 seats in the upcoming elections and the party is finalizing candidates.
During the 2020 riots, Pathan allegedly pulled a gun on a policeman and later his picture with the gun went viral on social media. He was then arrested and has been in jail ever since.
Elections to the 70-member Delhi assembly will be held in February next year.
The AAP, which has been in power in Delhi since 2015, is likely to face a direct clash with the BJP, as the party’s national coordinator Arvind Kejriwal has ruled out the possibility of any alliance with the Congress.
