The Legal Coordination Committee (LCC) of Government Doctors has requested the National Medical Commission to direct the state government to immediately implement the salary recommendations of the commission.
S. Perumal Pillai, state president of the committee, said that the salary of state government doctors would be the same as that of AIIMS doctors. It wants the government to set a starting salary of Rs 56,100.
It demanded allowances for trainee doctors and post-graduate medical students and salaries for medical educators. The LCC has demanded time-bound promotions for central government doctors.
The COVID-19 pandemic has emphasized the importance of public health infrastructure. The salary hike should be seen as an investment in public health, said Dr Perumal. Although there are 70 medical colleges in the state, including 37 in the government sector, there are only 19,000 doctors in the government service.
