“A 22-year-old man slapped an accused in a murder case during a hearing in a sessions court in Maharashtra’s Thane district,” police said on Monday (December 23, 2024).

“The slipper did not hit the judge but hit a wooden frame in front of his desk and fell next to the bench clerk,” they said. The incident took place on Saturday afternoon (December 21, 2024) at a Kalyan city court and a First Information Report (FIR) was registered against the accused.

“Accused Kiran Santosh Bharam was produced before District and Additional Sessions Judge RG Waghmare for trial in the murder case against him,” said an official from Mahatma Phule police station.

“At that time, the accused requested the judge to transfer his case to another court. The judge asked the accused to apply through his lawyer,” the official said.

“Then the name of his lawyer was called, but he was not around and did not appear in the court. Therefore, the accused was asked to name another lawyer to represent him and the court gave a new date,” he said.

“The accused then bent down, took off his sandal and threw it in the direction of the judge, shocking everyone present in the court,” the official said.

“Subsequently an FIR was registered against the accused under sections 132 (assault or criminal force to prevent a public servant from discharging his duty) and 125 (endangering the life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code,” the police added.
