Bangladesh’s interim government on Monday (December 23, 2024) said it had sent a diplomatic note to India to send ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina back to Dhaka.
Ms Hasina, 77, has lived in exile in India since August 5 when she fled the country amid student-led protests that toppled her 16-year rule. The Dhaka-based International Criminal Tribunal (ICT) has issued arrest warrants for Ms. Hasina and several former cabinet ministers, advisers, and military and civilian officials for “crimes against humanity and genocide.”
“We have sent a note verbale (diplomatic message) to the Indian government that Bangladesh wants to return him here for judicial proceedings,” Advisor on Foreign Affairs or de facto Foreign Minister Tauhid Hussain told reporters at his office.
Earlier in the morning, Home Advisor Jahangir Alam informed that his office has sent a letter to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to facilitate the extradition of the ousted Prime Minister from India.
‘We have sent a letter to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for his extradition. Now the process is going on,’ he said in response to the question asked by the journalist.
Mr Alam said an extradition treaty between Dhaka and New Delhi already exists and Ms Hasina could be brought back to Bangladesh under the treaty.
