A special task force in West Bengal is searching for Javed Ahmad Munshi, a suspected militant of the banned Tehreek-ul-Mujahideen (TUM), along the waterway route he regularly takes from West Bengal to Bangladesh.
On Monday, in a joint raid by the Jammu and Kashmir Police and the Special Task Force (STF) of West Bengal, Munshi was arrested, and two mobiles and a handwritten note with several numbers on it were recovered, sources said.
According to police sources, Munshi had reached the Canning area a few days before his arrest, allegedly planning to flee to Bangladesh at the behest of TuM operatives who were his handlers.
According to sources, Munshi used to enter Bangladesh by boat from Canning in South 24 Parganas.
Sources said that while they are trying to decode the code, the main point of inquiry is the waterway route used – as well as how often he used it, whether he was recruiting people from West Bengal, and whether he was in charge of any sleepers. cell in the state.
Sources said that during the initial interrogation, Munshi admitted that he had visited Bangladesh, Nepal and Pakistan several times using fake passports on the instructions of his handlers.
Police said they will investigate who Munshi met in India, as well as any social media groups or online material they may have exchanged.
A Kolkata court on Sunday remanded Munshi in transit to the Jammu and Kashmir Police till December 31. Canning is located in the Sundarban Delta. The Sundarbans forest covers 10,000 square kilometers in India and Bangladesh, 40% of which is in India.
Javed Munshi, an alleged expert in handling IEDs and weapons, was accused of playing a role in the 2011 killing of Ahl-e-Hadith leader Shaukat Shah and served several jail terms on terrorism-related charges.
