A year-old murder case has been reopened in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut, after a hitman who was out on bail approached the police over non-payment of ransom for a job, officials said on Friday. According to the police, the conspirators who killed lawyer Anjali Garg last year promised to pay Rs 20 lakh to contract killer Neeraj Sharma, but now he has gone back on his promise.
On June 7, 2023, Anjali, a resident of Umesh Vihar Colony of TP Nagar police station in Meerut, was shot dead by two persons while returning home from dairy.
The police initially arrested the victim’s divorced husband and father-in-law over a property dispute. However, they were later released.
According to the official, the victim was living in a house in the name of her ex-husband Nitin Gupta. Her father-in-law later sold the property to Yashpal and Suresh Bhatia, but the victim was not ready to vacate the house – resulting in a dispute.
Within a few days of the murder, it was revealed that the property buyer had killed Anjali on a contract of two lakhs to Sharma and two others.
Five people, including Yashpal, Bhatia and Sharma, who shot and killed Anjali, have been arrested.
Now, a year later, Sharma, who is out on bail, has revealed that the victim’s father-in-law and husband were also involved in the murder.
The father-in-law had promised a ransom of Rs 2 lakh and had given Rs 1 lakh in advance, he told the police. Since Sharma was arrested, he could not take the remaining Rs. 19 lakhs. However, even though he contacted the victim’s in-laws for the remaining amount after being released from jail, they refused, Sharma said.
According to the complaint of the accused, the police should take action against the victim’s father-in-law and register a case.
The police said that he also provided the call recording of his father-in-law as evidence.
